Project Wild, Wander, Design

Graphic Design Vertical Studio Fall 2015, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

This project explored the topic of wildlife conservation and education through design. Each student researched the life, habitat, and critical issues surrounding a selected animal listed as endangered to translate into an interactive, informative, and immersive experience. Project components included the creation of a 'field guide' booklet as well as a larger product, which included packaging and product design, game design and web design. (Syllabus below.) 

 

Project Game Design: Identity, Interactivity and Information

In teams, students explored the experiential identity of a selected local landmark or campus space through game design. Teams conceptualized and constructed a playable, physical game edition complete with a name, concept, game mechanics, rules, packaging, and game pieces. (Syllabus below.)

Project Consumption and Identity

Students tracked their consumption of a product or media for analysis, and developed both an infographic and a product rebrand based on their personal reflection and use. Considerations included intended target market, material use, and existing identity. Deliverables were based on grade level and could be digital or packaging-based. (Syllabus below.)


Project UIUC Library Identity

Teams of students had the task of designing an identity system for a selected library on the UIUC campus. Teams assessed the current usage, theme, content, and needs of the space, and developed a set of materials for wayfinding, promotion, interpretive and exhibition graphics, as well as a concept for a digital installation or mobile app.  Student work shown here is from: the Map Library, the Undergraduate Library, and the Music Library. Ninth Letter 11.2

Fall 2014University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Art Direction (co-direction with M. Meilleur) for the nationally recognized, bi-annual literary journal Ninth Letter. Student design work for this issue focused on the theme of 1960's air travel. Students worked on the journal layout, typesetting, and article illustrations; illustrations included mock 1960’s advertisements, travel stickers, and photography in studio and on location.  


Creative Problem Solving MOOC

Spring 2013, University of Minnesota + Coursera  

I was a teaching assistant and discussion section leader for several sessions of a creativity development course. I became co-instructor for the first round of the course when it became a Massive Open Online Course, open to teaching creativity with a global community. Design Process: Photography

Fall 2012 + Fall 2013,  University of Minnesota

This was a comprehensive digital photography class tailored for graphic designers and the only photo course within the design department. In general, most students had minimal previous experience with photography. Student work examples below are from these selected projects: Editorial/Documentary/Photo Essay; Abstraction Through Nature vs. Nurture (composing attracted shots with only the camera vs. manipulating through digital technology); Photographic Style + Portrait; Photographic Narrative + album book making.
